After a solid 10 hours course setting last Friday, I’m happy to report that the Rogue Adventuregaine course is coming together nicely. Teams should expect some classic rogaining country with intricate navigation, along with some challenges unique to the Rogue.
The Borumba Dam area was impacted heavily by the recent floods, which were the worst the region has ever seen since the dam was built over 30 years ago. When I was there, water levels had receded to 30cm, yet Yabba Creek below the dam could only be described as “pumping”, with many of the bridge crossings only just above the water. Earlier in the week though, the levels peaked at 6.7m (!), and it’s almost impossible to comprehend that amount of water if it weren’t for the debris strewn through trees meters up in the air.
None-the-less, the Rogue course is still looking great. Trekking legs are predominantly in open undercarriage, with no grass seeds and minimal lantana observed. Plenty of route options for all levels of ability, with some tough climbs and great views to both punish and reward teams with the tenacity to go for the big points. The lake itself contained a ton of flood debris and mud, but this should clear well before the race date. Virtually every CP requires a strategic decision on its pros and cons.
There are now less than 10 entries available for the 24hr race, so if you were thinking of entering, I’d suggest you do so soon before the race sells out and the wait list opens. There are, however, plenty of places in the 8hr Rogue option. A full team list can be found here. Many teams have links to Face Book profiles or team blogs, so make sure to check out the competition as they prepare for the race.
Finally, we are still looking for a number of volunteers to help run the race on the day. These include jobs such as moving equipment, supervising transition areas and assistance at HQ. These races couldn’t happen without the support of volunteers. All volunteers get a free feed, fuel reimbursed at generous rates, free camping (all volunteers will get the chance for a proper sleep during the race), the chance to see the race in action and plenty of thanks. Please contact me if you are able to lend a hand. Full details about the race can be found here.
Look forward to catching you at the Rogue! – Liam
EDIT 04/03/2013 – The 24hr event has now sold out and the wait list has opened. There are less than 10 places left in the 8hr option.
